Snoot, the giant anteater born at Edinburgh Zoo in April, has been confirmed as male.
The discovery was made during the three-month-old pup’s first health check by the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS).
Snoot has recently begun spending short periods away from his mother Gizmo, a natural stage in his development that allowed keepers to safely examine him for the first time.
Born to Gizmo and Zeferino, Snoot is still closely dependent on his mother. Visitors can see the pair exploring their hilltop habitat together, with the youngster still regularly hitching a ride on Gizmo’s back.
The giant anteater (Myrmecophaga tridactyla) is native to Central and South America and is listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List. RZSS directly supports conservation work for the species through its partnership with the Wild Animal Conservation Institute (ICAS) in Brazil.
