A western lowland gorilla (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) has been born at Zurich Zoo, marking the first birth since the gorilla group was reorganised last year.
The infant was born to first-time mother Mayumi on Monday morning. According to the zoo, the birth was uncomplicated and the newborn began nursing shortly afterwards. Mayumi has been caring attentively for her infant, while the other members of the gorilla troop have responded positively to the new arrival.
Although the first signs are encouraging, the zoo notes that the first weeks of life are particularly critical for young gorillas. Animal care staff will therefore continue to monitor both mother and infant closely as the youngster develops.
The birth is an important contribution to the European Endangered Species Programme (EEP) for the western lowland gorilla, a species classified as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List. Carefully managed breeding programmes play a key role in maintaining a healthy and genetically diverse population under human care, supporting the long-term conservation of the species.
