Wrocław Zoo has welcomed a new male African wild dog. Eddie arrived from Safari Park Dvůr Králové, in the Czech Republic, to join the two females already living in Wrocław, Kamari and Nandi.
Introducing a new individual requires careful preparation, particularly for highly social species such as African wild dogs. After his arrival, Eddie was initially given time to explore the new habitat and become familiar with its surroundings, scents and sounds.
According to Wrocław Zoo, the male quickly began exploring, while the animal care team closely monitored the reactions of Kamari and Nandi. The two females soon showed interest in the newcomer.
A successful first introduction
The first encounters between the three animals were calm. Eddie, Kamari and Nandi investigated each other’s scents, observed one another and gradually initiated contact.
The positive behaviour shown by all three allowed the team to proceed with their introduction more quickly than might otherwise have been possible.
Eddie is now living together with Kamari and Nandi, and the three African wild dogs are already sharing the same habitat at Wrocław Zoo.
The successful introduction is particularly significant for a species characterised by strong social relationships. For African wild dogs, interactions between members of the group are a central part of their social life, making the careful management of introductions between unfamiliar individuals especially important.
