Birds of prey have arrived at Zoomarine. And with them comes Biss, the red-legged seriema, one of the animal kingdom’s most renowned snake hunters.
Seven individuals representing six different species of aerial predators have joined the park: from Nebli, the peregrine falcon, to Willy and Wonka, the two Harris’s hawks; from Hermione, the barn owl, to the seriema, which subdues snakes by repeatedly striking them against the ground to stun them. They are joined by Cleopatra, the shy Verreaux’s eagle-owl, and Otto, the majestic Eurasian eagle-owl who, despite his impressive size, appears wary of smaller wild birds of prey.
Their arrival brings the total number of species housed at Zoomarine to 40 and represents another step in the expansion of the park’s zoological collection, which is set to grow further in the coming months. At the same time, the park continues to renovate its facilities, beginning with the Nature Amphitheatre, where the birds of prey perform, with the aim of further enhancing the educational experience for visitors.
«Tutti i sette esemplari provengono dal Bioparco Zoom Torino, con cui condividiamo le competenze e l’esperienza nella gestione delle diverse specie», spiega Cristina Pilenga, curatrice di Zoomarine, parte del gruppo Openature insieme al bioparco Zoom. «Durante le dimostrazioni educative, i visitatori potranno osservare i principali comportamenti naturali di questi uccelli, dalle tecniche di caccia alle diverse modalità di volo, comprendendo come ogni specie si sia evoluta per occupare una precisa nicchia ecologica. È un modo concreto per trasformare l’osservazione degli animali in un’esperienza di conoscenza».
Each individual also has distinctive personality traits, well known to the keepers who cared for them until just a few weeks ago.
«I keeper che li hanno accompagnati a Zoomarine, ci hanno raccontato anche le particolarità del loro carattere e delle loro abitudini», prosegue Pilenga. «Sappiamo, ad esempio, che Cleopatra osserva sempre con attenzione l’ambiente prima di spiccare il volo. Otto, invece, nonostante l’imponenza, preferisce tenersi a distanza dei piccoli rapaci selvatici dei quali sembra avere timore. Nebli affronta il logoro con la determinazione tipica del falco pellegrino mentre, tra le due poiane di Harris, Willy è il più curioso ed espansivo. E Biss conferma ogni giorno la fama del seriema crestato, mettendo in mostra la straordinaria tecnica con cui cattura i serpenti».
With the arrival of the six birds of prey and Biss, the red-legged seriema, Zoomarine has expanded its zoological collection with some of the world’s most remarkable aerial predators, complementing the marine species, the wide variety of tropical and aquatic birds, and the terrestrial mammals already cared for at the park.
